Finnish Inspired Hamburger Recipe

When my husband and I first got married I was gifted several typewritten recipe cards with traditional Finnish recipes from one of his sweet aunts. This Finnish hamburger recipe is inspired by some of my favorite Finnish flavors, including those found in his aunt’s delicious Finnish meatballs. Use this unique Finnish recipe at your next backyard cookout or make ahead for a spring or summer picnic.

How To Make Finnish Hamburgers

  1. Start by preheating a cast iron skillet on the stovetop over medium high heat.
  2. Add 1 lb of raw ground beef to a large bowl.
  3. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of onion powder, 3/4 teaspoons of allspice, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper to the ground beef. Mix well by hand to combine the spices through the ground beef.

4. Shape the ground beef into 4 hamburger patties and place in your preheated cast iron skillet.

5. Cook the hamburgers on one side for approximately 4-5 minutes. You’ll know when the burgers are ready to flip by keeping an eye on the side of the hamburgers. When the meat begins to look browned halfway up the side of the burger it’s ready to flip.

6. Flip your hamburgers and cook approximately 4-5 minutes on the other side or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Right before your burgers are done, top each burger with a slice of gouda cheese.
