This Swedish Apple Pie recipe is the easiest and most delicious apple pie you will ever make. Just mix and spread the cookie-like top crust for a unique spin on the classic apple pie we all love!
The Origins of This Recipe
I found this recipe on a vintage recipe card in my maternal grandmother’s recipe box. It quickly became my favorite family heirloom recipe of all time. The top crust is so easy and unique. I’ll never make any other version of apple pie again!
Swedish Apple Pies and Bottom Crusts
Traditionally the Swedish Apple Pie does not have a bottom crust and my grandmother’s original recipe does not call for a bottom crust. However, on busy holidays like Thanksgiving, I usually buy a 2 pack of pie crusts to save time when I make my paternal grandmother’s pecan pie. Since I already have the extra pie crust I will usually use the second one for this recipe. You can make this pie with or without a bottom crust.
How to Make Swedish Apple Pie
Peel, core, and slice 2 1/2 cups of Granny Smith Apples (approximately 3 apples, depending on the size). I love using my apple spiralizer for this step.

Put your apple slices in your bottom pie crust, if using, or place directly in the bottom of a pie dish with no bottom crust. Sprinkle your apples with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of sugar.

In a separate bowl, mix together 1 cup of sugar with 3/4 cup melted butter and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. Mix in 1 cup of all purpose flour, 1 slightly beaten egg, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix well until topping forms a cookie dough consistency.
Spread the topping over your apples.

Bake your Swedish Apple Pie at 350 degrees for 65 minutes or until golden brown.

Little Cooks Corner
Tiny sous chefs of any age can assist by pouring the cinnamon and the sugar over the apples, pouring the top crust ingredients into the mixing bowl, mixing the top dough, and spreading the dough over the apples. Older toddlers can help by measuring the ingredients and using the apple spiralizer.

Notes
Traditionally, Swedish apple pies do not have a bottom crust. I usually buy a 2 pack of frozen pie crusts for busy holidays like Thanksgiving and will sometimes use a frozen pie crust with this recipe after I've made my pecan pie. A bottom pie crust is totally optional. You can place the apples directly in the bottom of a pie dish and make it with only the top crust, as is traditional for this recipe.
