DIY Nature Scavenger Hunt For Kids

In our family, we love to get outside every chance we can. When we can make our time outside a fun learning experience, that’s an even bigger perk! Our toddler has been working on learning his colors so we decided to mix up our time outside and have a nature scavenger hunt!

The Benefits Of Learning Outside

Being outside promotes curiosity, exploration, and sensory experiences. Practicing colors through a nature scavenger hunt provides toddlers with an authentic hands-on learning experience. Learning through this real world application is engaging, fun, and promotes a deeper understanding of the world. Toddlers and young children are natural explorers. Let them practice their colors while exploring and developing an appreciation for the small wonders around them.

How To Use This Nature Scavenger Hunt

Kids of all ages will enjoy this nature scavenger hunt, not just toddlers! Make the scavenger hunt a competition for older kids. If you have a large group, break out into teams to see who can complete the scavenger hunt first. Up the challenge by seeing how closely you can match the exact shade of the paint samples you used.

Use this scavenger hunt in your backyard to encourage kids to get outside, on a walk through your neighborhood, at your local park, or as a game for a nature or camping themed birthday party. This is also a great activity to keep little ones engaged during a family hike or camping trip. (You can learn more about hiking with little ones here.)

How To Make This DIY Nature Scavenger Hunt

  1. Go to your local hardware store and pick up some paint swatches in several different colors. 8 paint swatches fit really well on a standard clipboard.
  2. Use clothes pins or binder clips to attach the paint swatches to a clipboard. If you’d like to do this activity over and over again with basic colors it might be helpful to glue your paint swatches to the clipboard to keep them in place. We want to change the paint colors out periodically so we chose to hold them on with clothes pins.
  3. Search for items in nature that match the colors on the paint swatches and pin each item over the corresponding paint swatch with the clothes pin or binder clip.
a clipboard sits on the ground with the following items clipped to it with clothes pins: 8 paint swatches in different colors, a pink berry, an orange leaf, a yellow leaf, a green leaf, a purple flower, a white flower, and two different kids of tree bark.
