This traditional Coca Cola Cake is a true taste of the South and gets rave reviews everywhere I take it. I’ve spent a decade perfecting this recipe and it is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever eaten. I often make this cake for potlucks, meal trains, parties, to say hello to new neighbors, or as a thank you gift and it is one of my most requested baked goods from friends and family. I know you’ll love this cake as much as we do.
How To Make A Traditional Southern Coca Cola Cake
- Start by preheating your oven to 350. Spray a 9×13 casserole dish with cooking spray and set aside.
- Whisk 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of all purpose flour together in a large bowl. Set aside.

3. Add 1 stick of butter, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, and 1 (12 oz) can of coca cola to a medium saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil over medium high heat while whisking.

4. Once your coca cola mixture has come to a rolling boil, remove from heat and pour over your sugar and flour mixture. Whisk well by hand to combine. Do not use an electric mixer.

5. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 teaspoon baking soda with 1/2 cup buttermilk. Add the buttermilk mixture to your cake batter and whisk by hand to combine.

6. Whisk 2 large eggs and 1 tsp pure vanilla extract into your batter.

7. Pour your coca cola cake batter into your prepared casserole dish and bake for 35-40 minutes until top springs back when lightly pressed or a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While cake cools slightly, prepare your frosting.
8. Bring 1 can of coke to a boil at high heat in a medium saucepan until reduced to 1/2 cup, about 15 minutes.
9. After your coca cola has reduced to 1/2 cup, lower the heat to medium. Add 1 stick of room temperature butter and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Whisk until the butter is melted.

10. Once the butter is melted, pour your coca cola mixture into a large bowl with 4 cups of powdered sugar. Whisk until smooth. The frosting should be thick. If its too watery, add more powdered sugar.

11. Spread frosting over warm cake.
